DYCLEX

An ERC Consolidator Grant on compound climate extremes in the mid-latitudes

The Right Time for a Breakthrough

Gaining a deep understanding of compound extremes is highly societally relevant. However, it is not easily realised from a scientific standpoint. In DYCLEX (DYnamical drivers, predictability and trends of compound CLimate EXtremes), we will use an interdisciplinary knowledge base to provide a radically new perspective on the drivers, predictability and trends of compound climate extremes. The analysis framework we will develop is a flexible tool, applicable to a wide range of multivariate extremes in the Earth system and beyond.

About

In DYCLEX, we aim to trigger a step-change in understanding the dynamical drivers, predictability and trends of compound climate extremes. The project builds on the hypothesis that the large-scale atmospheric circulation is a key control of many compound extremes and that, in combination with thermodynamic effects, it modulates trends in these extremes. Thus, elucidating its role can lead to major scientific and practical advances. Building on atmospheric dynamics, dynamical systems theory, statistical analyses and machine learning for the study of extreme events, DYCLEX will detect and quantify compound climate extremes and elucidate their link to different large-scale atmospheric circulation features. We will then leverage this to identify new predictability pathways for the compound extremes and to explain their long-term occurrence trends.

The DYCLEX project revolves around a core research team based at Uppsala University. We interact regularly with a broad network of national and international collaborators.
